It’s hard for us to drink a cup of Uptown Blend without thinking of local legend, Marie Catrib. Uptown Blend was concepted for her longstanding Grand Rapids institution of a restaurant of her own name. Designed to be a go-to breakfast drinker, Uptown Blend pairs nicely with all of the breakfast standards, from triple stacks of pancakes, to savory omelettes and frittatas. Oh, and we can’t leave out Marie’s originals like breakfast pasties and sweet potato-quinoa burgers. We digress. Uptown Blend is luscious and velvety, with mellow malic acidity, and flavors of hazelnut and cocoa. Start your day strong with this sweet sipper.
Base Component: Lending this blend its deep creaminess and roasted apple character, this coffee hails from the state of Veracruz, located in Mexico’s gulf coast. It’s produced by growers in the Catuai Amarillo cooperative, with support from the larger Incafesam union. Composed of lots from around 40 - 50 growers, these coffees often have notes of lemon meringue, orange peel, and honey.
Accent Component: To source this coffee, Sparrows works closely with Coffee for Peace, a coalition of coffee farmers and market allies. CFP works to ensure economic stability in historic conflict zones in Colombia through coffee, by aiding farmers with business development, trade facilitation, and coffee quality improvement. This coffee comes from La Gavina farm in the municipality of Santander, contributing accents of malt, citrus zest, and molasses to the blend.
